Why reachable is not the same as public
On results day the school's phone line is the bottleneck. A public lookup takes that load off the office — but a result page is also a page of a child's marks, open to anybody holding the right two pieces of information, and those pieces are often printed on documents the child carries.
So the defaults lean closed. The portal starts disabled and opens only when the school opens it. Rank, photograph and attendance are hidden unless switched on, because each one reveals something beyond the child's own result. Opening an exam to public lookup is a separate act from publishing it to the student's own login, which lets a school publish internally on Monday and go public on Wednesday as announced.
Every lookup is throttled and recorded. Captcha and per-IP limits make walking through admission numbers slow and visible, and the log stores each attempt with the address and the identifier hashed — enough to spot a script working through numbers, without keeping a list of the children somebody guessed at.
Result pages are kept out of search engines. They carry a noindex directive and a matching response header, and they stay crawlable precisely so that the directive is read. Reachable with an admission number is a different exposure from being listed on Google.

Can we choose exactly when results go live?
